Matthew
5:1-12
Jesus and Tough Times – Monday 11th
to Sunday 17th October, 2010
Introduction
Discuss what you think
it means to be ÒblessedÓ by God. (See Genesis 12:2-3; Genesis 24:35; Psalm 1:1-2; Psalm
32:1-2). How does the Biblical picture compare with how the world understands
ÒblessedÓ?
Studying the passage - Read
Matthew 5:1-12
1)
To be Òpoor in spiritÓ is to acknowledge our spiritual
poverty, our bankruptcy before God. Why do such people inherit the kingdom of
heaven? Why is it so difficult for us to admit our spiritual poverty?
2)
Why would the poor in spirit feel the need to mourn (verse 4)?
The poor in spirit mourn for themselves and for others. What have you heard in
the news lately that causes you to mourn?
3)
How would a true estimate of ourselves (verses 3-4) lead us to
be ÒmeekÓ – i.e. to have a humble and gentle attitude to others (verse
5)?
4)
Jack Gibson once said, ÒState of Origin proves that the meek
inherit nothing.Ó From the worldÕs
point of view, why is it surprising that the meek will inherit the earth?
5)
Biblical righteousness has three aspects: legal, moral and
social. What does it mean to hunger for each of these (verse 6)?
6)
Why do you think God wants us to be ÒmercifulÓ and Òpure of
heartÓ (verses 7-8)? How do these reflect GodÕs character?
7)
Would someone
describe you as a ÔpeacemakerÕ (verse 9)? Why, why not?
8)
Why do you think the world hates those who belong to Jesus
(verses 10-12)?
Response
How have these verses challenged you to change?
Spend some time praying for one another, asking God to make you hungry and thirsty for righteousness.
